Andy Potts put on a display of patience in St Croix as the talented American captured his second Ironman 70.3 title of the season. Potts led the men’s field out of the water with France’s Stephane Poulat nipping at his heels as they ran up the beach.
Poulat bike his way to the lead until the closing miles, when Lance Armstrong, predictably worked his way to the front. The seven-time Tour de France winner carried a 2:11 advantage over Potts and Poulat as the trio entered T2.
Armstrong proved to be stubborn, as he held onto a 1:01 leading margin over Potts at the conclusion of the first of two loops of the run. Poulat was running third only 0:16 back of second place at the time. However, Potts made his move early on final loopof the run and started to make significant inroads into Armstrong’s lead. On the strength of his second best run split on the day, Potts went on to win this year’s Ironman 70.3 St Croix title. Poulat finished second, while Armstrong completed the day with a solid performance to round out the podium in St Croix.
For the women, Germany’s Nina Kraft led the field out of the water followed closely by USA’s, Mary Beth Ellis. Canadians Sara Gross and Angela Naeth exited the water in third and fourth and found themselves spotting 2:45 to the lead pair.
It was Naeth who showed her usual dominance on the bike as she raced into the lead. Ellis managed to keep leader within 2:00 for the last half of the race, however, that was as close as Ellis would get to the front today. Neath, despite riding a flat tire for last six miles of the bike, managed to hold a 1:58 lead as the pair entered the transition.
On the run, Naeth extended her lead to 3:58 at the completion of the first loop of the two loop run. Naeth put her run on cruise control for the closing half, and won her second Ironman 70.3 race of the season with a 5:23 winning margin over Ellis. Gross put together a solid run that thrust the Ironman specialist into third place.
